Firemen and Irresponsibility
Two years ago the city where the bruig is located cut 13 firefighters from the force when the city eliminated it's ambulance service to save money. These cutbacks were necessary when half the local manufacturing jobs were eliminated by the depression and changes in the global economy which resulted in a huge decline in tax revenue. The fire department staffing level dropped to 103 full-time firefighters, saving $1.9M per year.
Despite the outrage and clamour about community safety by the local democrat faithful there has been no visible decline in public safety. The local hospital's ambulance services takes stricken residents to the hospital just as quickly and the hospital EMTs provide medical services equal to those provided by firefighters, at significantly reduced cost to the city. No fires have burned out of control nor have any casualty events occurred with the absence of these 13 firefighters from the force.
Now comes the Obama administration with a $1.9M ARRA SAFER grant which the democrat mayor used to hire the 13 firefighters back. They will not be EMTs but firefighters. So suddenly the mayor wants 13 additional firefighters, not because of city needs, but because it puts 13 people back to work at $73, 076 per man per year and it "doesn't cost the city anything". Great logic Mr. Mayor. The money comes from somebody, somewhere. And in fact it will cost "us" because the grant requires that the city pay for a third year, so half of the $1.9M budget cut goes back in the budget in 2012.
The city's manufacturing base has dwindled to half the pre-depression level will never recover. There are no economic development projects in the works to restore those lost good-paying jobs. In fact, the city population has dwindled with the loss of jobs along with tax revenue. Where the hell does the mayor intend to find the $950,000 to fund those 13 jobs in 2012. I don't know and I suspect the mayor doesn't know (or frankly care) either.
This is nothing more than democrats blatantly paying off their union supporters with bribes for votes. I usually don't begrudge what someone else makes but these union firefighters make $73076 per year while local recently hired engineers with 25 years experience are making $51000 per year. That's $36.57 to mostly lie around watching TV at the firehouse and occasionally go spray some water on a burning trashcan. And don't tell me these heroes are rushing into burning buildings saving children every day because that's Hollywood bullshit. Firefighters suffer less injuries and death from accidents than the public at large.
I'm a first responder for lithium ion battery fires at my work, which are explosive and far too common, and have sent the firefighters home once in the past year after handling a fire. I have no protective equipment, no air pack and no radio to call for backup. It's just me and one of my guys killing power to the tester and SWEEPing the battery with a CO2 extinguisher. Another 95 batteries are in the test stand heating up to possibly catch fire, explode and set the whole plant on fire. Neither of us are getting hero's pay near $36.57 per hour.
I'm making 60% of what I was making before the democrats imploded the economy with their socialist policies. I'm sure as hell not going to be driving an economic expansion or paying the tax bills that I used to. Who the hell is going to pay for this crap? Not me. I should be a die-hard democrat with their "tax the rich" policies since I'm barely lower middle class by most standards. But I'm not getting the government handouts and somehow I just know that the democrats think that I'm "the rich".
I did something that the congress won't do this year, which is a family income, expense analysis this morning. It's called a budget for any congress critters who might be reading. Money is tight here at the bruig. Although we'd like to do a few more things, we can't afford it. So we won't. It's called fiscal responsibility. But the city will just be irresponsible and hire more heroes to keep the barrel rolling down the road. Asshats!
