Welcome to the Future
The unemployed and under-employed are no longer an issue in america, the recession is over so it's time to "buck up" and move on. Only labor organizations care about this issue, and not so much because they care about workers but, rather, they want the cash and power they derive from union dues. The ILO used the UN to cite unrest due to unemployment. But neither care about anything but their organization.
Politicians don't want to talk about the unemployed because they neither have a plan to reduce it nor does it inspire anyone to vote for them. So it will be ignored in this election.
The new Congress will be focused on deficit reduction not jobs or unemployment benefits so those that are unemployed will be on their own once current benefits expire. The 10-20 percent unemployment rate will be the new normal along with lower earnings for the 14-28 million people in the US that manage to find work.
The american economic pie has shrunk permanently. The upper quartile will not lose their slice and the lower quartile will continue to enjoy their slice of economic redistribution, so that leaves the middle to eat the losses.
The lower middle quartile will endure the harshest treatment in this new economy, as they desperately try to maintain their standard of living by cutting out all luxuries.
This quartile has historically improved their lot by promotions, overtime and working a second job. In the new, flat economy none of those will be available. So this quartile will just pay the bills and try to survive. Since this group is the largest of the four, the consumer economy will suffer with this group, locking the economy is perpetual depression.
As the downward economic pressure mounts, more of the lower middle class will be pushed ever lower, with many falling into the lower quartile. Eventually american society becomes highly stratified into a few haves and mostly have nots, resembling a feudal society. Cooperation between classes will falter and fail, breeding utter contempt between classes.
As opportunity vanishes for the lower classes and the richest quartile grows ever richer expect class warfare to break out at all levels. There is no reason to behave when you have no hope. Once the mask is off america will start looking like every other third world shithole in the world.
I've come to believe that homeland security and terrorism threats are just a canard for population control by the upper classes. DHS is not really interested, nor effective, in stopping real terrorists, but does a fantastic job of conditioning normal folk to being surveilled, probed, questioned and ordered about by bureaucrats. In the new america, government makes all important decisions and the people are to submit and obey lest they be labelled a terrorist. State security trumps constitutional rights in every case.
