Lara Mis-reports
Lara Logan is going to discuss her "sexual assault" on 60 Minutes. She's not covering herself in glory in this story. In fact she's letting CBS make some money off her misery while she does the same. And she plays fast and lose with both words and ideas in doing so.
In an interview with the NYT, Lara says that “for an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands” although she never mentions any vaginal penetration. Isn't rape a specific legal term that refers to vaginal penetration? Lara seems to be demeaning the word, and actual rape victim's suffering, with her loose use of the term.
Lara also fails to find the problem in Muslim society when she says, “When women are harassed and subjected to this in society, they’re denied an equal place in that society. Public spaces don’t belong to them. Men control it. It reaffirms the oppressive role of men in the society.”Really? Men are the problem Lara? Not some specific men like Muslim men?
Lara seems to have a problem with men and oppression, as if the beating and groping might occur in Peoria, Leeds, Beijing or Santiago. Or perhaps anywhere that "men" can be found, at the soccer stadium, tabernacle, the rice paddy or the beach. Is this true or has Lara missed the point? Could it be possible that ladies shouldn't go out uncovered in Dar al Islam lest they get beaten and groped?
Lara missed an opportunity to make an important point about Islam to women. Instead she trivialized real rape victims and turned all men into Muslim predators. Great reporting! Now I guess that I'll dump Lara into the box labeled "Dumb Blonds".
